Jessica Chastain Takes on the Darkest, Most Twisted Role of Her Career in a Tension-Fueled Series About Tracking the Internet’s Ugliest Secrets That Makes Molly’s Game Look Calm and Could Outshine It Chapter 2 and The Help

I’ve never seen a Jessica Chastain-led project that I didn’t automatically adore, and The Savant is no exception to this rule. The Molly’s Game star has taken her acting chops to the small screen with her tension-fueled Apple TV series, The Savant. The dark TV show is reportedly based on the real-life happenings of an undercover agent who monitors online hate groups in order to prevent harm.

The series is set to premiere by the end of the month, and fans are already excited to see Chastain in what might be her most complex role yet. This is saying a lot, since the seasoned actress is no stranger to tackling insanely challenging movie roles, as we’ve seen with Beverly Marsh in It Chapter 2 and Celia Foote in The Help.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Savant, and the true story behind the upcoming series.

The series follows Jodi, who on the outside appears to be your typical suburban housewife and mother. But when no one’s watching, she’s going undercover in the most gruesome online hate groups in order to prevent major hate crimes before they strike in real life. And the series couldn’t come at a more poignant time.

The show is loosely based on a real-life undercover spy who tries to prevent the most horrific hate crimes from happening IRL. This woman’s story was anonymously unpacked in a Cosmopolitan article, where she’s referred to as K, and she opened up on how difficult it is to balance her mental health and family life with her grim undercover work.

“Her life depends on her anonymity,” Andrea Stanley writes. “She maintains such a low profile—no personal social media, zero selfies floating around on the internet (trust me, I looked)—that her biggest claim to fame in her cul-de-sac is that she chased off a guy who was grifting everyone’s Wi-Fi.”

“In the Marines, I was surrounded by people who would kill themselves to try and save me if I was in trouble,” K says. “In the work I do now, I don’t have that kind of backup.”

She has a spreadsheet of the men she’s currently keeping tabs on (at the time of the article’s publication, the list was at 1,000). “I know their screen names, their real names, their fake names, when they change their names,” she continues. “Given the opportunity, I’m sure they would come after me.”

K relies on her instincts, but she also “remembers their name and everything about them.” Even though her work is “just a drop in the ocean,” I wouldn’t want to know a world without her.

Fans are looking forward to the celeb’s upcoming TV show, yet no one is more excited than Jessica Chastain herself. She opened up on the complexity of the upcoming project while speaking to The Television Academy. “The idea that every single day this woman is pretending to be a hate-filled, homophobic, racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic a—hole, looking at so many images that are really harmful and destructive and having to write such things — how do you prevent that from taking over who you are?” she says. “That was the most interesting thing to explore about the character.”
