This Underrated PBS Murder Mystery Is Secretly Darker, Funnier, and More Shocking Than Thursday Murder Club—Retirees, Housewives, and a Dog Walker Are Exposing Small-Town Secrets You Won’t Believe

Can we PLEASE talk about The Marlow Murder Club, AKA the most underrated hidden gem TV show on PBS? The series centers around a pair of unlikely mommy sleuths, consisting of a full-time dog walker, a 77-year-old crossword enthusiast, and a settled-in housewife. Yet after the 77-year-old woman hears a gunshot in her seemingly idyllic neighborhood, she becomes desperate to uncover what occurred. At first, no one takes her claims seriously, believing her to be a batty elder who’s just hearing things. But the more she and her crew of amateur detectives investigate the murders creeping throughout their small town of Marlow, the more cold truths they manage to uncover.

“You couldn’t have just started a book club, could you?” says police detective DS Tanika when she approaches the group. This quote perfectly captures the witty sense of humor throughout the murder mystery series, which is a nice touch for a show that centers around such dark themes. With the PBS series’ perfect blend of laughs, drama, and genuinely engaging characters, it boggles my mind that more people aren’t raving about The Marlow Murder Club. And when I heard they were coming back with a season 3? I literally squealed with excitement.

What separates this Masterpiece PBS Series From Other Cozy Mystery Programs?

The truth is, there are so many cozy mystery shows out there, so how is one to stand out from the crowd? One of the reasons I love The Marlow Murder Club so much is that, although it’s a genre and premise we’ve seen so many times before, this PBS series feels outstandingly unique. I love the characters, the diversity, and the representation. I love the fact that the lead protagonist is a 77-year-old woman who isn’t just portraying someone’s cookie-baking grandma.

And most of all, I love the chemistry between the lead cast members, who shine as a comedic ensemble. Because the heart of the series lies in the dynamic between these three women.

“Everything in The Marlow Murder Club passes the Bechdel test,” said series actress, Cara Horgan (aka Becks). “The four leads are not talking about men. As Becks, Judith, Suzie, and Tanika, we are women working towards a common goal. We are not there discussing the male protagonists’ interests. We’re talking about something external that is of interest to us all. I love the scenes where we are piecing clues together.”
