Will there be a Season 2 of The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix: Everything we know so far

The Queen’s Gambit became a global phenomenon when it premiered on Netflix in 2020, turning Anya Taylor-Joy into a household name and sparking a renewed fascination with chess worldwide. The series swept awards season, earning Golden Globes and Critics Choice wins, and cemented itself as one of Netflix’s most successful limited series to date. But with so much success, fans have continued to wonder if Beth Harmon’s story could ever return for a second season.

Has Netflix confirmed a second season?

As of now, Netflix has not officially announced a second season of The Queen’s Gambit. The series was originally billed as a limited series and closely followed the 1983 novel by Walter Tevis, which does not have a sequel. Executive producer William Horberg has previously said that the creative team always envisioned Beth’s story as complete by the end of season one.

Horberg told Deadline after the Golden Globes, “We felt that the series had a satisfying endpoint and we’d allow the audience to fill in the space as to what happens next for Beth Harmon.” Despite this, he admitted that the outpouring of love from fans has kept conversations alive.

What have the cast said about a possible season 2?

Anya Taylor-Joy has not ruled out the idea of returning to the role that defined her career. Speaking to Town & Country, she said, “If I’ve learned anything from being in this industry, it’s never say never. I adore the character. And I would certainly come back if I was asked to, but I do think we leave Beth in a good place.”

Co-star Harry Melling, who played Harry Beltik, also said he would be open to revisiting the story. “It’d be good, right, a Queen’s Gambit part two? The place we end in the limited series is the place we end in the book. I don’t know if there can be another one, but stranger things have happened.”

What could season 2 explore?

Since the show exhausted the original source material, any continuation would have to be an original story created for television. Season one ended with Beth defeating the world’s greatest chess player in Moscow, finally overcoming her inner demons and addictions to claim her place at the top.

A second season could follow Beth as she defends her title and navigates the pressures of being the world champion, while also introducing new challengers. The show could also explore her personal life more deeply, her relationships with other players, and her ongoing struggle with her past. Walter Tevis himself once hinted at wanting to continue Beth’s story in a second book, but he passed away before writing it, which leaves the door open for the creative team to take inspiration from his idea.

Who would return for a second season?

If Netflix were to greenlight a sequel, Anya Taylor-Joy would undoubtedly return as Beth Harmon. Fans would also hope to see Thomas Brodie-Sangster back as Benny Watts and Moses Ingram as Jolene, two of the most beloved supporting characters. Harry Melling’s Harry Beltik could also reappear in a larger role. However, characters like Mr. Shaibel and Alma Wheatley, played by Bill Camp and Marielle Heller, would be unlikely to return as their stories concluded in season one.

The chances of renewal

Although the showrunners have been consistent in calling The Queen’s Gambit a one-time story, the series’ continued popularity on Netflix means a season 2 cannot be entirely ruled out. If the creative team and cast find a new angle worth telling, Beth Harmon may yet return to the board. For now, fans can revisit season one on Netflix and imagine where Beth’s journey might have gone next.
